I've had Microsoft Works on every computer since '95.
Worked on Win95, 98, 98 SE, XP, Vista. No problems.
About a week ago a notice of MS update appeared, same
as I usually get when Bill Gates updates Vista. I click
Install and go about my business. Couple of days later I
go to open Works to update my Bills Paid data base
and........new version of Works.
All my old data bases ...........gone.

Probably if you pay enough MORE money, you can get them back.

I'm not familiar with M$ Money but it seems odd that the upgrade would
delete old databases. Are you sure it hasn't simply been removed from
the history list (or pick list)? In that case, a simple File/Open
command would recover it. Another possibility is that the new version
uses a new default file format, in which case there is probably an
import function to move the old data.

I was able to recover one file by going into program files and drilling
down to the old MSWorks file, there was a second file but trying
to open it yielded a "file is corrupt."

MS stopped supporting Money a couple years ago, I switched to Quicken
when I got my new computer.
I liked Quicken until their Update Utility removed functions that
previously worked and told me that I would have to buy a NEW version
to get said functions back.

They SAID it was because they couldn't support the older version any
more. Yeah, right.

It would be one thing if said functions didn't work any more because
banks no longer supported older formats ... the LIE they tried to sell
me. Instead, they purposely REMOVED the functions with an "update".

So, a word-of-warning:
If you buy a copy of Quicken, *** DO NOT *** activate or even allow
their update-utility to function!!!!!

It's a SCAM to force you to buy a new version every few years.
Actually, once the program runs, you don't NEED any updates.

If, by chance you ever DO, then backup the program and all of your
data BEFORE installing the updated program.

Probably would have been a good idea with Micro$hit Money.

I do a data back up, to a flash drive, every 5 transactions. (I did
that with Money, though to a 3.5 inch floppy, too. (New computer
doesn't have a floppy drive.))

Get a USB port floppy, they are cheap.

So are flash drives, with a lot more memory than floppies.

BTW, I did get an external drive, but it's moot, in this context.
